The human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Turkish security forces of mass violence against migrants on the Syrian border. “Hundreds of deaths and injuries” have been reported in recent years.
“Turkish gendarmes and border control forces routinely assault and indiscriminately fire at Syrians along the Syrian-Turkish border,” said Hugh Williamson, HRW’s Europe and Central Asia director on Thursday. The organization is calling for an investigation into the incidents.
The organization described an incident in March, citing conversations with those affected and relatives of the dead and evaluation of photographs.
HRW: Two men died in custody
Turkish border guards beat and tortured a group of eight Syrians who illegally tried to cross the border from Idlib, Syria. A man and a boy died in custody, the others were seriously injured.
According to its own statements, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented 11 deaths and 20 injuries along the Syrian-Turkish route as a result of violence by Turkish security forces since early 2023.
UN: 3.5 million refugees from Syria in Turkey
HRW said it had independently documented and verified two of the incidents mentioned. According to the UN, there are about 3.5 million refugees from Syria living in Turkey.
