NATO chief: – Ukraine has already received 230 tanks

Date:

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Ukrainian army has already received “more than 98 percent of the combat vehicles” promised to the belligerent country under the international contact group.

In total, this involves 230 tanks and more than 1,550 armored vehicles for the defensive war against Russia, Stoltenberg said on Thursday during a meeting with Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel in Brussels. “This puts Ukraine in a strong position to recapture occupied territory,” the Norwegian added.

More than nine Ukrainian armored brigades have now been trained and equipped. They consist of several thousand Ukrainian soldiers each. As for the capabilities of the Russian armed forces, Stoltenberg said they should never be underestimated as they try to make up for the lack of quality with quantity. “We see that Russia continues to mobilize more personnel,” he said. The fighting for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut also showed Russia’s willingness to absorb a large number of dead and wounded.

“China must understand Ukraine’s positions”
Stoltenberg responded to the phone conversation between Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping: “It is important for China to better understand Ukrainian positions.” The Norwegian pointed out that China is attacking Russia’s war against Ukraine. He also stressed that it is up to Ukraine to decide under what conditions talks are possible. A condition for meaningful negotiations is for Ukraine to show Russian President Vladimir Putin with military force that he will not win on the battlefield, Stoltenberg stressed. Anyone who wants Ukraine to assert itself as a sovereign and independent nation must support it militarily, as NATO allies do.
