17% share of foreigners – Austria is ageing: 43.2 years on average

Date:

The median age in Austria has increased by 1.4 years since 2011 and was 43.2 years on 31 October 2021. This is one of the results of Statistics Austria’s latest census. The data shows an increase in population in the metropolitan areas and a decrease in the periphery. On the reporting date, 8,969,068 people were counted, of whom 7,401,924 were Austrian citizens.

The number of people of foreign nationality living in Austria has increased by about two thirds (plus 66.7 percent) since 2011 to about 1.57 million people. Thus, the share of those who do not have Austrian citizenship is 17.4 percent.

Germans as largest group of foreigners in Austria
The largest group are Germans with about 213,000 people, followed by citizens of Romania (about 136,000) and Serbia (about 122,000). Most foreigners live in Vienna (31.9 percent), followed by Vorarlberg (18.7 percent) and Salzburg (18.3 percent).

The increase in mean age was even more pronounced between the 2001 and 2011 censuses, when it was 2.2 years. “So the population is still aging, but not as fast as in the previous decade,” Statistics Austria reported on Friday, based on the now final data from the 2021 census. “The male inhabitants are on average 2.5 years younger than the female population. .”

The housing analysis revealed a difference compared to the Central Inhabitants Registration (ZMR): It showed that “on the reference date of the 2021 register census, 0.7 percent of the main residence registrations in the Central Inhabitants Register were incorrect – the population was therefore 62,880 people lower than the ZMR reported,” says director general of statistics Austria, Tobias Thomas.

7.4 million have Austrian nationality
The number of main residences from the ZMR reference date was 9,031,948. After the analysis of the place of residence, the so-called population number was 8,969,068. The bulk of unrecognized main residences were in Vienna at 1.48 percent and Salzburg at 0.96 percent. The so-called “number of citizens” – the number of people with Austrian nationality – was determined by Statistics Austria at 7,401,924.

The largest population increase since 2011 was 12.4 percent or 212,733 people in Vienna, which was home to more than 1.92 million people. Vorarlberg (plus 8.3 percent) and Tyrol (plus 7.5 percent) also grew above average. Carinthia recorded the smallest increase with about 8,000 people, compared to 2011 an increase of 1.5 percent.

State capitals: Eisenstadt with the strongest growth
The largest increases remained in the cities and environs. The state capital with the strongest growth was Eisenstadt (plus 16.2 percent), followed by Vienna (plus 12.4 percent) and Graz (plus 11.5 percent). The strongest increase outside the provincial capitals was recorded in the districts of Bruck an der Leitha (plus 14.6 percent), Wiener Neustadt/Stadt (plus 14 percent), Graz-Omgeving (plus 11.8 percent) and Gänserndorf (plus 11.6 percent). per cent).

Major decline in Upper Styria
The largest decrease occurred in Upper Styria and the northwest of Lower Austria. The population fell most sharply in the districts of Murau (minus 6.5 percent), Leoben (minus 4.8 percent), Waidhofen an der Thaya (minus 4.4 percent), Zwettl and Gmünd (each minus 4.3 percent). .

“In 2021, the census in Austria took place for the second time as a register count,” explains Thomas. “While other countries still have long questionnaires to complete for the census, Statistics Austria has only been using administrative data since 2011. With this, Austria – together with countries such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden – is taking on a pioneering role in the EU.”

The official end result for the population and the number of citizens is central as a basis for calculating legal standards, such as financial equalization. Statistics Austria has announced the publication of further register census results on employment, commuting, education, households and families for July.
