Dive into the crowd, play with emotions, feel for crackling “beats” in the right beat – DJ Andy Funk controls everything at the touch of a button! But Saturday is different. The van Bollwerk and Co. well-known disc jockey tries to hit more than the right note like Andreas Skerbis at Industry Boxing in Graz (with PLUS subscription from 7 p.m. live on krone.at).
The heart pumps, the sweat runs. It’s no wonder when people are celebrating, dancing, rocking the club and cooking under him. But Andreas is not currently at the DJ booth in a hip discotheque. But panting heavily towards his sparring partner from Fightclub Graz.
Endurance training, successions of punches and kicks, learning the right pattern – a strict training program has accompanied the 37-year-old for months. A team led by national coach Martin Haag sharpens the diamond in the rough so that it can shine on Saturday at the Raiffeisen Sportpark Graz.
“In the beginning it reminded me a bit of the army,” Skerbis winks. Knowing full well that “healthy toughness” is important for success in the ring. “You learn from the bruises where you made mistakes. Martial arts shape, form and are fun,” he says, looking forward to his combat debut against Andreas Fotr.
“Expect a clean fight”
The latter is already in his third fight. That’s why it won’t be easy for the DJ to “put one on” for the medical supervisor and Champions Gym veteran. While coach Haag is optimistic that he has taught Skerbis the necessary skills (“It was nerve-wracking, but now I can send Andy into battle!”), his protégé remains coy. “I expect a nice, clean fight,” says the electronic music enthusiast, who now works full-time as a caregiver for the disabled. It is therefore not surprising that his “housey” lead-in track was also mixed himself. At least there is something for your ears.
The performances in discotheques, which have taken him to Italy, Slovenia and Germany in addition to the local Bollwerk, A1 Linz and Nightflight Leibnitz, were recently cut back due to training on weekends. A necessary and welcome sacrifice. “I have always been a martial arts enthusiast and would have loved to box in 2019. But then Corona came…”
Which also closed the club life. “Meanwhile, there is a resurgence, although the elderly, it seems to me, are still a little more reluctant to leave and tend to stay at home. Perhaps it is also due to inflation,” Skerbis muses.
Be there live with a subscription
In any case, he wants to offer his fans a spectacle on Saturday. Both on site and in front of the screen, who with a PLUS subscription can enjoy the thrill of the twelve exciting fights exclusively in the live stream from 7 p.m. (here are our offers).
