Snow chaos in the middle of May! Due to several trucks that got stuck in heavy snowfall, the Arlberg Pass between Alpe Rauz and St. Christoph had to be closed for some time on Monday morning. After the heavy vehicles were recovered, the connection between Tyrol and Vorarlberg was reopened to traffic shortly after 08:00.
Due to the closure, there was initially no direct road connection between Vorarlberg and Tyrol – because the Arlberg tunnel has been closed since the end of April due to extensive renovation work.
Austria’s longest road tunnel, almost 14 kilometers long, will not be passable until October 6 due to renovations.
75 million euros will be invested
Asfinag is investing a total of 75 million euros in renovation measures. In addition to the roadway, the tunnel coating and the entire drainage system will also be renewed. The ban is scheduled for six months this year, with another five months in 2024.
As in 2015 and 2017, traffic will be diverted via the Arlberg. A diversion variant with destination and source traffic zones has been set up. About 8,000 road users use the Arlberg tunnel every day.
