The 100th anniversary of the Sonnberg fire brigade in the Mühlviertel is overshadowed by a serious accident: two comrades were seriously injured when the Kelomat bursting juice like a volcano. But it was not a defect in the device.
Friday was a big party. The first fire truck from Sonnberg was pulled into the village hall by horse and carriage, as the official ceremony for the 100th anniversary of the Sonnberg fire brigade. This was established after eight houses in Obersonnberg burned down in a major fire on September 12, 1921. A woman and her child were then killed. The fire service was founded two years later.
Boiling hot gravy
Now it was time to celebrate and, as usual with fire parties, there was plenty for the “physical well-being”. Two comrades (46 and 51 years old) worked in the kitchen to heat up gravy. To do this, they put a pressure cooker on the stove and shortly after 7pm, if the temperature was right, it would be served. The kitchen helpers relieved the pressure, but apparently not enough. Because when they opened the cooking pot, the boiling hot gravy splashed out and hit them both on the upper body.
The emergency doctor treated the two firefighters, who were then taken to the Sisters of Mercy Hospital in Linz. In order to provide the best possible care for the burns, the Mühlviertlers were transferred to the AKH in Vienna, where there is a special department for burns.
