In Berlin, 12,000 fans celebrated him at the start of his concert tour and folk rock’n’roller Andreas Gabalier (38) left empty-handed at the Amadeus Awards in Vienna. A behind-the-scenes conversation about envy and success, gender politics and gut feelings, and the secret of “Hulapalu” (168 million views on YouTube).
The Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin-Friedrichshain on Friday evening: Andreas Gabalier gives an almost three-hour show on stage, the audience cheers and dances and cries. Thousands have come in costume. Dirnd dresses everywhere you look. And “real men”, as Gabalier likes to emphasize. After the concert, the Styrian enjoys bathing in the crowd for 30 minutes. Around 11:30 pm, after hundreds of selfies and a lot of skin contact, the room empties and we meet Austria’s most controversial artist backstage for an interview in the German capital.
“crown”: What just happened in the hall and what is this energy doing to you?
Andrew Gabalier: A movement has grown that started ten years ago and is now stronger than ever. Even Corona couldn’t break them. There is always so much joy in the eyes of children and visitors of all ages. These people long for togetherness and closeness. They want to experience something face to face rather than just floating in these virtual worlds. It makes me grateful, humble and proud.
