The woman was attacked by the predator after sneaking out of the house. Her husband didn’t hesitate for a second.
Dramatic scenes took place in the remote settlement of Fort Severn, the northernmost community in the Canadian province of Ontario. A hungry polar bear sneaked into a couple’s driveway unnoticed.
Suffered serious bite wounds
Wanting to check on the barking dogs, the woman slipped on the icy ground and was immediately attacked by the huge predator.
But her husband reacted instinctively: without hesitation, he threw himself at the polar bear to distract it and save his wife’s life. The man himself suffered serious bite and scratch wounds to his arms and legs.
But he survived. He owes this to his attentive neighbor: he heard the couple’s screams and immediately rushed there with a gun. He used well-aimed shots to scare away the polar bear, which was found dead a short time later by hunters in a nearby forest.
Polar bear attacks are rare
The injured husband was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. He is expected to recover, a local police spokesman said. While polar bear sightings in the area are common, attacks like this are rare, the official added.
