After the municipality of Hörbranz (Vorarlberg) was surprised by a landslide on Friday evening, it is now clear that the damage is greater than expected.
On Friday evening, a forest slope in Hörbranz started to move during heavy rainfall. Rocks and trees fell over a length of 150 meters, 39 people had to be brought to safety from surrounding houses. About 40 hours later it was clear: fortunately no one was injured by the landslide, but streets and houses in the immediate vicinity show cracks in the building fabric.
Rain: fear for Monday
On the positive side, there hasn’t been a major landslide since Friday night, only isolated boulders or trees have come loose. However, the heavy rain is expected to return soon – on Monday. These could then contribute to a significant extension of the landslide. In any case, the slope is still under constant observation, including by the state geologist.
Alternative sleeping arrangements
The residents of the surrounding houses are allowed to return to their homes during the day, but have to look for alternative places to sleep at night. Anything else would be too dangerous. Those affected should take into account that it will take a few more days before they can go home again.
