On Sunday evening there was a collision between two freight trains in Kittsee in Burgenland. Several wagons derailed. Overhead lines and track systems were heavily damaged.
The collision happened around 9:40 p.m. on a railway narrowing directly under the A6 bridge. The two trains collided sideways. According to the police, both train drivers (aged 30 and 26) were not injured. A rail replacement service with buses was set up on the Parndorf – Bratislava-Petrzalka section. The A6 remained closed in the accident area for about eight hours.
Difficult recovery
A fire was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade and a small amount of escaped hazardous material was bound. According to the Burgenland police headquarters, it involved three to four liters of nitric acid. The ÖBB stated that there was no danger to local residents or the environment. It was difficult to recover the accident car under the highway bridge.
Trains ran parallel
According to police, the freight trains ran parallel on the journey from Kittsee to Pama. Due to, among other things, transported containers colliding with stands, the part of the Autobahn from Kittsee to the state border was blocked, according to the police. The A6 was blocked until 4:45 a.m. on Monday.
