The new free plans for the second quarter for frequent travelers that Renfe offers from this year 2023 have entered into force This Monday, May 1. The validity of the first four-month subscriptions expired yesterday, April 30, so it is necessary to renew them to continue traveling for free on the Renfe Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia trains until August 31.
The procedure is the same as before: subscriptions are free, but the user has to pay a deposit 10 euros in the case of Cercanías and Rodalies and 20 euros in the case of Media Distancia. The deposit will be refunded automatically at the end of the four months validity of the subscription, provided that the user has made a minimum of 16 journeys.
So far, just over 250,000 new free passes (150,000 for Cercanías and 100,000 for Media Distancia) have been issued for the second four-month period.

Passes can be purchased through the renfe.com website, the Renfe Cercanías app or at the train stations.
2.26 million subscriptions in the first quarter
Renfe has issued 2.26 million free passes for Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia, and 50% discount Avant vouchers, for travel between January 1 and April 30, 2023.
Of the total passes used in the first four months of this year, more than 1.6 million correspond to Cercanías and Rodalies tickets, and some 537,000 to intermediate distance passes. In addition, 118,000 50% Subsidized Avant Notes were acquired.
