An organized escape attempt took place in the detention center in Vordernberg in Upper Styria on Sunday afternoon. Nine deportees climbed over the prison gates. Rescue workers and firefighters also had to turn out.
Nine detainees deported from the detention center in Vordernberg on Styrian Eisenstraße apparently joined forces on Sunday afternoon to escape from the institution. At around 2:30 p.m., the men from Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Iraq waited for the officers’ patrol before simultaneously attempting to climb over the fences.
Between the two fences, the guards located eight of the nine escapees. A ninth, 20-year-old and from Morocco, reached the outer gate.
Refugee injured himself
There he was stuck several meters high at the top and refused to come down again. The 20-year-old injured himself with the barbed wire fence. “To confirm his intention to flee,” police say.
The local fire brigade had to use a crane to get the man back to the ground. Police officers managed to get him back with a basket. He was treated as an outpatient at the hospital.
All nine inmates are now being transferred to the closed prison, state police said.
