Explosion on raid – Syria: Turkish secret service kills IS leader

Date:

A leader of the extremist group Islamic State (IS) was killed in northern Syria on Saturday. The Turkish secret service had been on his trail for some time, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday. The raid would have been in the town of Jandaris.

According to a resident, clashes broke out on Saturday night and lasted about an hour. Then an explosion followed. Security forces then cordoned off the area. Jandaris is controlled by rebel groups that support the Turkish government under Erdogan.

It now stated that the leader of the Islamic State, Abu al-Husayn al-Husayni al-Qurashi, had been assassinated by the secret service. The state news agency Anadolu wrote about “neutralization.” The IS did not announce the violent death of its leader until late November and proclaimed Abu al-Husayn al-Husayni al-Qurashi as his successor. Experts assume it is a battle name.

lost dominion
For years, IS controlled large areas in Iraq and in the neighboring civil war country of Syria. However, the extremists have now lost their reign again. Groups are still active in both countries. The Turkish army occupies areas in northern Syria and carries out military actions there, mainly against the Syrian-Kurdish militia YPG.

Suspected supporters of IS are regularly arrested in Germany. The Turkish government also blames the militia for a 2016 attack on the Istiklal shopping street that killed four people and injured 39.
