The head of the Identitaire movement was again acquitted of the hate speech charge. Sellner makes good use of the stage in the process. If it weren’t for that one grammatical error…
The trial of Martin Sellner, the head of the far-right Identitaire Movement in Austria, lasted 19 minutes. Accompanied by his wife and some supporters, the 34-year-old took a seat in room 102 of the Vienna regional court – charged with “sedition”.
Lawyer does not see a “fixed rate”
According to the prosecutor, he posted the following sentence on December 7, 2022 in Vienna in his Telegram group with 59,700 subscribers to an article about a raid of Reichsburgers: “Every asylum poses a greater danger than the Reichsburger.” as a result, a group that generally insults the asylum seeker. “The post is about an asylum seekers’ center and not about asylum seekers,” his lawyer Bernhard Lehofer dismisses the accusation. His client pleads “not guilty”. He speaks politely and confidently to the judge, but then he slips: when he talks about the house searches of Reich citizens in Germany, he says: “…in the German re…eh…it says…”
The judge follows Sellner’s reasoning and pronounces an acquittal, not final. Again. Because Sellner has never been convicted of charges to the contrary in previous proceedings.Nothing remains of the accusation except public attention and media presence.
