High level of detail – ESA shows first image from new weather satellite

Date:

The European Space Agency (ESA) has published a first image from the new weather satellite MTG-I1. It should provide data to the weather services by the end of the year.

Cloud vortices, snow-capped peaks and sediments in the sea off the Italian coast – the first image from a new European weather satellite gives scientists hope for better severe weather warnings due to the sharpness of detail Paris-based space agency ESA and European weather satellite operator Eumetsat. The satellite “Meteosat Third Generation Imager-1” (MTG-I1) was launched in December and took its first image on March 18. Important contribution to civil protectionIt offers a higher resolution and updates its recordings more often than its predecessors. This should provide national weather services with better data for forecasting – especially for rapidly emerging and rapidly changing weather conditions. Weather services expect an important contribution to civil protection. Lightning can also be registered. Storm clouds must be recognized more clearly using the satellite data and their lifespan better estimated. In addition, the predictions must be limited to a smaller area. For the first time, “MTG-I1” will also be used to capture lightning for Europe via satellite. According to the information, the data also makes it possible to detect fog and forest fires automatically. In addition to other imaging satellites with imaging instruments, the “MTG-I1” series also includes so-called sounder satellites – satellites with spectroscopic instruments. They can be used to track the three-dimensional movement of water vapor and other gases in the atmosphere. The first of these will be launched next year.
