A 20-year-old man has taken action against the habit of tourists urinating in front of his door in Venice. So he put a note on his front door asking: “Don’t pee in the street, I’ll lend you my toilet for one euro!”.
20-year-old Daniele Lucentini lives in Venice with a friend. Fed up with the foul smell coming in through his window at Sant’Angelo pier, he put a Post-it note on his door to offer tourists the use of his apartment’s toilet.
“Intended as a provocation only”
“Now that the windows are open when the temperature is higher, the smell that enters my apartment is anything but pleasant. So I decided to put up a sign saying ‘toilet 1 euro’, which was only meant as a provocation,” Lucentini told La Nuova Venezia daily.
During the three days that the note hung on his door, Lucentini was visited by a number of tourists who used his toilet. City residents accused the young man of wanting to make money from his initiative. Others admitted that the lack of public toilets is the cause of many tourists’ bad habit.
Controversy “escalates”
“Now I have removed the note because the social media controversy has escalated. Of course I didn’t want to make money off this, I just wanted these people to stop peeing in front of my house,” said Lucentini.
The lagoon city of Venice has tightened sanctions in recent years for violations of public order. If you urinate wildly, you will be fined up to 3300 euros.
