11. Femicide this year – ex-boyfriend’s accident resulted in dead Styrian

Date:

It’s the 11th murder of a woman in 2023 – and the police actually tracked down the crime because of a traffic accident. Because the murder victim’s ex-partner was involved in a car accident, the woman’s parents drove to her apartment to check on her daughter. When they got there, they found the woman dead on the couch. In the late evening hours it became clear that the woman had been murdered. Your ex-partner is under strong suspicion.

On Thursday around 8:00 a.m., the police officers of the Rottenmann police inspectorate became aware of a traffic accident on the B113 between Trieben and Rottenmann, Liezen district. The driver – as it later became clear, is the suspect – was trapped in his car. Firefighters pulled the seriously injured man from the wreckage. The C14 rescue helicopter transported the man to the LKH Graz. Based on the evidence at the scene of the accident and because no other vehicles were involved, police quickly assumed a suicide attempt.

The driver of the vehicle had to be put into an artificial deep sleep. Since the identity of the man could not be established, the owner of the vehicle was identified from the license plate – this was the mother of the murdered woman.

Found dead lying on the couch
When she heard about the accident with her car, she and her husband immediately drove to their daughter’s apartment in Hohentauern (Murtal district). There she found the woman lying dead on the couch around noon.

Violent death by suffocation
Police officers from the Oberzeirig Inspectorate suspected that outside influences could be responsible for the woman’s death. The Styrian criminal investigation department and forensic medicine were consulted. The latter was found a violent death by suffocation on Thursday evening. “According to the current state of the investigation, there should be a connection between the woman’s death and the serious traffic accident of her ex-partner. The couple had just separated,” the state police said on Friday.

Couple was recently divorced
The man has not yet been questioned. He is still in the intensive care unit of the LKH Graz. The public prosecutor in Leoben has ordered the seizure of the wreckage and further investigation into the suspicion of murder. Due to the protection of victims, the police are not giving further details about the age and locations of the events.

Similar case just two weeks ago
Just two weeks ago, a similar case occurred in Styria, where a 28-year-old in the Wetzelsdorf district of Graz allegedly killed his partner with a kitchen knife. During his flight, he also caused a fatal traffic accident in which a bystander was killed. Police are investigating the man on two counts of murder.
