Climate activists of the last generation have once again targeted a water well in Rome. They poured a black liquid into the basin of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s “Fountain of the Four Rivers” on Saturday afternoon.
They wanted to “set an example for the black future that awaits humanity,” said those involved. When police arrived, the four activists were removed and taken away, Italian media reported. According to police, the liquid was diluted biochar.
Roman mayor Roberto Gualtieri condemned the action. “This is another senseless act of defacement of monuments in Rome. You don’t save the environment by endangering artistic heritage,” Gualtieri wrote on Twitter. Three young activists poured the same liquid into the so-called Barcaccia fountain at the foot of the Spanish Steps in April. They had also smeared paint on the facade of the Senate beforehand.
Government tightens pace against climate activists
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet recently passed a decree providing for the payment of damages ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 euros and “criminal sanctions” for those who “destroy, defile or deface” cultural objects. Members of the climate protection movement are under investigation for “criminal conspiracy” in the northern Italian city of Padua. The group has been responsible for roadblocks and damage to private and historic buildings since 2020.
