To reduce prices – Sweden: biofuel in fuels will be reduced

Date:

The Swedish government is reducing the share of biofuel in diesel and petrol. This is intended to lower fuel prices and relieve the burden on citizens. From the beginning of 2024, six percent biofuel will be prescribed, previously this was 30.5 percent in diesel and 7.8 percent in petrol.

The right-wing Conservative government has already cut fuel taxes, enacted tax breaks for commuters and cut subsidies for new electric cars. Now follows a new rule for the share of biofuel. “Biofuel blending rules have not been an effective climate policy,” the members of the government and the Swedish Democrats wrote in the newspaper “Dagens Nyeter” on Sunday.

According to the plans of the previous coalition, the share should actually increase every year. The addition of biofuel should stimulate the change to electromobility. However, the new government, which has been in power since October, sees the Swedish population as underprivileged. Due to high taxes, the prices at the petrol stations are high: a liter of diesel costs 20.3 crowns (more than 1.80 euros), a liter of petrol costs 18.8 crowns (almost 1.70 euros). In addition, Sweden as a whole is struggling with a rising cost of living.

Climate protectors have criticized the approach
Climate protectors criticize the plan to reduce the share of biofuel. They fear that the Northern European country will not meet its climate target for 2030. In 2045 there may be no more CO₂ emissions.
