Ukraine accuses Russia of undermining the grain deal. The deal has effectively been halted because Russia refuses to register and inspect incoming ships, Ukraine’s Reconstruction Ministry said Monday. “This action violates the terms of the current agreement.”
If the international grain deal between Russia and Ukraine is not extended early, it will officially expire in mid-May.
Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world
After the start of the offensive war against Ukraine in February last year, Russia blocked Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea for months, preventing the export of grain. Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world. This led to fears of a hunger crisis, especially in poorer countries.
In the summer, an agreement was negotiated under the mediation of Turkey and the United Nations. Since then, according to Turkish information, more than 27 million tons of Ukrainian grain have entered the world market.
The agreement, originally for 120 days, has been extended twice, the last time for just 60 days. Russia has repeatedly threatened to scrap the agreement. This is also justified by the fact that the country’s own grain and fertilizer exports are hampered by Western sanctions.
