At least three civilians were killed in a crash of a fighter jet in India on Monday morning. The pilot of the plane survived with minor injuries. The MiG-21 fighter jet crashed into a house in Bahlol village in Rajasthan state.
The pilot of the MiG-21 saved himself after an onboard emergency with the ejection seat. Several other people were injured in the incident, local news agency PTI reported, citing police.
The aircraft of Soviet design was on a training flight. The cause of the crash was a technical problem, Indian media such as the television station NDTV reported, citing authorities.
MiG-21s date back to the Soviet era
The Indian media previously referred to the MiG-21 as “flying coffins” because they crashed time and time again. Dating back to the Soviet era, the MiG-21 models have been India’s main combat aircraft since procurement began in 1963. Russia is one of India’s main suppliers of armaments. As reported by the media in 2022, the government plans to retire the entire fleet of fighter jets by 2025.
