People affected by inflation send shocking letters to a foundation. The cries for help, largely from working people, reflect their despair. But the fear is mixed with more and more anger.
Aid organizations and foundations are feeling the effects of the inflation that has reached mainstream society. “We’ve been inundated with emails for a few weeks now. People are desperate,” reports Veronika Bohrn-Mena, president of the Common Good Foundation COMÚN, which helps through a solidarity fund. “More and more people are working, especially women and mothers, who can no longer live despite their work. Where it used to go well, at the end of the month suddenly 300 euros is missing.”
The fear of being deported is also increasing
Bohrn-Mena is concerned: “It is already dramatic, but we are probably only at the beginning of inflation and we are heading for a harsh winter,” she fears that public concerns could turn into social unrest. “The people who write to us are also angry. Rent increases, utility bills, skyrocketing energy prices and rising food costs are having a huge impact on them. The fear of imminent eviction is also increasing.”
No money for healthy baby food
The letters that arrive at the foundation are requests for help. Meanwhile, innocent people are afraid of jail time because they are behind on their bills: “Well, it’s already gone so far that you have to go to jail for the GIS costs. I can’t sleep anymore. If I have to pay off the outstanding amount, I lose also my job!”, a working woman asks for support. Young mothers describe their situation no less dramatically: “We want to feed our children healthy, but we can no longer afford fruit and vegetables.”
