With phosphorus bombs? – Russian troops intensify shelling in Bakhmut

Date:

The Russian army launched a new wave of attacks on Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian army, 16 rocket attacks were counted on Monday night alone. Civilians would have been killed again.

The cities of Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv and the Odessa region were particularly affected. Kiev was also attacked again. The exact number of casualties could not initially be quantified. In Bakhmut, Russian troops stepped up their shelling. Videos should show the dropping of phosphorus bombs, as confirmed by British experts. Phosphorus bombs contain a mixture of white phosphorus and rubber. They are used as incendiaries and as means of smoke warfare. Both white phosphorus and its fumes are highly toxic. For an adult, 50 milligrams is lethal if taken directly.

On Sunday, the Ukrainian military released a video claiming to show these bombs in Bakhmut. The time of the attack is unclear. The Russian opponent repeatedly stressed over the past year that it had never violated international conventions, but the new statement was not responded to.

New Russian tactics?
The use of phosphorus bombs against civilians is prohibited under the Geneva Convention and would therefore be a war crime, but this does not apply to general use. The Ukrainian side has repeatedly accused the Russians of dropping phosphorus bombs, for example around Kiev, on Snake Island and on the Azov steel mill in Mariupol.

The city of Bakhmut, from which phosphorus bombs have now also been reported, has been the subject of fierce fighting for months. Contrary to their imminent withdrawal, the Russian mercenary group Wagner is still in town. Ukrainian ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyj said the focus is now on modern equipment and a regrouping of troops. The Russians would still hope to take the city on Tuesday, but Ukrainian troops would do anything to prevent that.

Dead and injured civilians
During the current wave of attacks, air raid sirens sounded for hours in about two-thirds of the country. “Unfortunately, there are dead and injured civilians,” the Ukrainian General Staff said. Both residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged. Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said 36 Iranian-made kamikaze drones were on their way to the capital. At least five people were injured in air strikes there.
