Trial in Graz – “I wanted to die and take my son with me”

Date:

A 42-year-old woman will stand trial in Graz on Tuesday for attempted suicide and her child. The suspect cut the wrists of her then four-year-old son and injured one of his arms with a knife. The child was rescued at the last minute by a neighbor. The jury’s verdict is expected later this afternoon.

“This is by far the scariest thing I’ve ever seen,” Judge Florian Farmer said. The suspect came to Austria because she finally wanted to free herself from her family in Slovakia. She worked as a nurse for the elderly for a few years, in 2016 she moved to Graz, where she met an Afghan and had a child in 2017. She lived a completely withdrawn life and suffered from depression.

Woman wanted to ‘break up with everything’
Last year, her boyfriend told her he was going to marry another woman and move to Upper Austria. The 42-year-old apparently couldn’t stand that and said he wanted to “finish everything” on May 31, 2022. She took a knife, went to her sleeping child and slit his wrists.

Place bleeding child in shower tray
She then cut herself on one forearm. She carried the heavily bleeding child into the bathroom and placed it in the shower tray. “I’m cold,” the boy is said to have said. So she took his blanket and tucked it in. Then she went to the neighbor and wanted to call her mother. The woman then called the emergency service, ran to the apartment next door and administered first aid to the heavily bleeding child. The little boy was saved after a four-hour operation.

The suspect said she saw no future for herself and the child. “I had a lot of problems and I wanted to die,” she said. Bringing the child to her family was not a solution for her. “I wanted to die and take my son with me.”

The suspect’s neighbor, a student, was also heard as a witness. She described how the 42-year-old called her and wanted to borrow her cell phone to call her mother. She didn’t reach them right away, so she tried again after a few minutes. The neighbor then saw the wound on her arm and asked if something had happened to the child.

The child would have died without the help of the neighbours
“She said something terrible happened to her son.” She did not want to be saved, but the student insisted on medical attention. Then she went to the next apartment and found the bleeding child in the shower tray. “She screamed, I can’t enter the apartment,” said the witness, who did not comply. “I tried to close the wounds until rescue came,” she described the situation. “I can only say thank you. Without you, the little one wouldn’t be alive,” the judge told the witness.

The verdict is expected in the afternoon
Psychiatric expert Manfred Walzl classified the suspect as having “impaired sanity”. She has a combined personality disorder and was going through a “major depressive episode” at the time. The expert emphasized that the likelihood of a recurrence of the incident is increased because it suppresses crime.

The jury’s verdict is expected later this afternoon.
