After the electionsthe authorities carried out more than 2200 arrests within a few weeks, which the UN said confirmed that the entire judicial system, headed by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), “is clearly subordinate to the interests of the executive and serves as a key instrument in its plan to suppress all forms of political and social opposition,” the report said.
The mission also documented 25 dead During the protests, the majority of young people were under 30 years old.
The president of the fact-finding mission, Marta Baliñas, has denounced “an intensification of the repressive apparatus”, despite “several” calls from Venezuela and also from the international community.
