Oral part follows – short breath: Central Matura ends

Date:

A short breather for the Austrian high school students: the written part of the central high school diploma ends today, Thursday, with the exams in Italian. In two and a half weeks, the oral maturity exams, which are staggered depending on the school, will continue. In addition, students who have failed the written Matura with a five can correct this on May 31 or June 1 in a compensatory exam.

Technically, these compensatory exams are part of the written Matura (although they are oral). Anyone who has a negative mark after the written Matura, even after processing the annual mark, is allowed to participate – so either a four in the annual report and a five on the exam or who has missed the threshold of 30 percent of the points In the exam.

Participation in the compensation test is voluntary
The questions in the compensatory exam are specified by the Ministry of Education, as in the case of the Central Matura, and are examined by the class teacher in the presence of a committee. Taking the exam is voluntary: those who decide not to take it and instead want to study for the oral Matura, for example, must correct the five by taking the written entrance exam again on one of the following dates. However, since taking the compensatory exam “costs” nothing, ie it does not mean that you lose the opportunity to take the exam, almost everyone involved at least try.

The oral entrance exams are also scheduled from the end of May or the beginning of June. By law, there must be a minimum of two weeks between the final written exam and the start of the oral exam – unlike the Central Matura or the Compensation Exam, there is no uniform date for the Oral Matura throughout Austria. Depending on the school, this is spread until just before the end of the school year.

No centralized questions
All students may participate, regardless of the result of the written Matura or the compensation test. Here too, the mark from the annual report is included in the mark for the Matura – the condition for this is not a certain number of points, as with the exam, but only active participation in the oral exam. Representatives of teachers recently saw this critically. In contrast to the written Matura and the compensation test, the questions in the oral Matura are not specified centrally, but elaborated by the relevant class teacher (based on the subject areas specified by the respective subject teachers of the school).
