Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, known for his pro-Russian stance, will fly to Moscow on May 23 to discuss “important geopolitical issues” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The president of the Bosnian Republic of Srpska announced this on Thursday.
Dodik is reportedly interested in the Russian president’s views on the “future world”. Arms deliveries may not be discussed, according to a message from the Bosnian Serb television channel RTS on Thursday.
Opposition to Russia sanctions
Bosnia and Herzegovina joined international sanctions against Moscow at the start of the war in Ukraine last year. However, due to opposition from the Republic of Srpska, the smaller Bosnian entity, these cannot be carried out.
Serbian nationalism and Dodik’s pro-Russian stance have fueled fears that a generation after the devastating war of 1992-1995, ethnic conflict could erupt again in the Balkan country. The Dayton Peace Accords ended the nearly four-year war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which left about 100,000 dead. Since then, the country has consisted of two autonomous regions, the Serb-dominated Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is supported by Bosniaks and Croats.
