After a powerful explosion in the center of Milan on Thursday, several vehicles caught fire, injuring at least four people. A pharmacy and some buildings were also damaged by the blast in the central Porta Romana district, news channel SkyTG24 reported.
The fire is believed to have started from a parked van in the street. The tongues of fire spread to five cars parked nearby and a building. According to Italian media, there are several injuries, one man suffered burns to his hand.
School also evacuated
The explosion may have originated from a van loaded with oxygen bottles. Carabinieri and firefighters cordoned off a large area and a school was also evacuated – but they would not be directly affected by the explosion.
Attack excluded
Meanwhile, Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala said “an attack” or similar events can be ruled out. “It’s a van that carries oxygen bottles,” he explained on the sidelines of an event at the Conservatorio. One of the injured is believed to be the driver.
