At taxpayer expense – Greens give away vibrators to Viennese students

Date:

Strange flowers, in the true sense of the word, are driving the ÖH election campaign, which ends Thursday. In the battle for the votes, they even handed out sex toys! To get into the right (choice) mood, the students were given a bag of CBD (cannabidiol from the hemp plant) on top.

Ballpoint pens, lighters and sweets as campaign gifts were a thing of the past. To grab the attention of potential voters, student representatives from the GRAS (Greens and Alternative Students) faction dug deep into their bag of tricks for this year’s ÖH election. At the end of the elections, vibrators were distributed in front of the main building of the University of Vienna!

Signs of the abolition of taboos on women’s sexuality
But how did you come up with such an idea? “We’re distributing vibrators to draw attention to the so-called orgasm gap between the sexes and to be a visible sign for enlightenment and breaking taboos on women’s sexuality,” said Sarah Rossmann, GRAS top candidate for the ÖH (Greens & Alternative Female Students) Election. In straight relationships, orgasms should not be reserved for men only.

“There must be so much GRASS”
In order to better process the political content, under the motto “There must be so much GRAS”, CBD was also distributed to the students in small bags. “Of course our CBD is legal and we also think it’s important to have an open discourse about the decriminalization of cannabis,” it says when asked by “Krone”.

Campaign budget is 70,000 euros
The campaign budget, according to GRAS, is 70,000 euros and is fully funded by the Greens. What does the state party actually say about the unusual action? “GRAS Vienna receives annual support from the Viennese Provincial Organization from the standard budget for political work. In 2023 that will be 50,000 euros.”

Addendum: Students can determine messages and measures themselves. 1120 euros was spent on a total of 340 vibrators. So only 3.30 euros per vibrator. So a real bargain. In any case, the model “Satisfyer A-Mazing 2” is available on a well-known shopping portal for 34.99 euros.

About 346,000 students
The national elections for the Austrian Student Union take place every two years. This time around 346,000 students are called upon to elect their representatives for the next two academic years. But voter turnout is sadly low. In 2021 that was only 16 percent. It will be interesting to see whether such actions have contributed to voter mobilization this time around.
