The rescue operation in Schwechat (Lower Austria), which was delayed by activists and reportedly killed a 69-year-old pensioner, caused much discussion. During a local inspection by the “Krone”, affected citizens vented their anger and demanded tougher penalties for the climate stickers.
Schwechat, Mautner-Markhof-Strasse 4, 24 hours after the rescue drama. All passers-by who address the reporter team “Krone” react angrily to the activists. As reported, a 69-year-old collapsed in the residential complex. Although a team from Lower Austria arrived on the scene within four minutes, the Viennese rescue service was also alerted to take the patient to a hospital in the federal capital.
But precisely this emergency vehicle was stopped as a result of a sticky action. When the helpers arrived in Schwechat, it was too late: the patient had died!
In the nearby shopping center we talk to several passers-by and coffee house guests. Like three women at breakfast, they almost all demand the same thing: “These climate stickers should be punished much more severely.”
Regardless of the tragic incident, the activists continued their actions unabated and quite impassive on Thursday – and at three neuralgic points in Vienna’s morning traffic: the asphalt was picked up on Schüttelstraße, Donaukanal Straße and on Mariahilfer Gurtel. Just like the days before, there were huge traffic jams with mega CO2 emissions.
No one aware of guilt & great togetherness
The activists pleaded “not guilty” to the delayed rescue operation – “it was not right that a rescue operation should have been blocked”.
Greenpeace boss Alex Egit showed solidarity with the concerns that are being highlighted with sticky campaigns: climate crisis and species extinction. These actions would show how diverse the climate movement is.
Global 2000 expert Reinhard Uhrig: “Commitment and protest take different forms. The acute crisis demands attention.”
“Six months in jail possible!”
dr Barbara Auzinger, Viennese lawyer and ‘Krone’ columnist, does not take the incident lightly in the interview:
“crown”: Does your heart beat faster from these climate stickers?
Auzinger: I am de jure neutral. But every child knows that life can be in danger when an emergency vehicle approaches.
So in the eyes of the experienced lawyer this is not a trivial offense?
I don’t know the act, but the justification and one’s own pride in standing up for a cause – even if it is climate protection – ends when an ambulance asks for passage – that is total ignorance.
Sanctions too low?
For a family member or those affected, the frame is always too low. Bodily harm caused by negligence with serious consequences – as may have been accepted by this blockade – carries a maximum prison sentence of six months.
Tougher punishments?
I do not believe in legislation for these climate stickers.
