Against the background of speculation about whether the Ukrainian counter-offensive is already underway, numerous updates are coming in on the situation at the front. Russia’s defense ministry now claims Ukrainian troops are advancing on the town of Soledar in Ukraine’s Donetsk region on Friday. And that “along the entire front line with a length of more than 95 kilometers”.
This was communicated by the representative of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation Igor Konashenkov. He said Ukrainian forces launched 26 attacks in one day. More than a thousand military personnel were involved, as well as up to 40 tanks and other military and special equipment. However, according to Konashenkov, these attacks have been repulsed.
Zelenskyj confirms land gains
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Friday afternoon that the army had seized territory near Bakhmut.
“We heard the report of General (Olexander) Syrskyj, whose units stopped the enemy with overwhelming efforts and even threw them back in some sectors,” the 45-year-old told Telegram after a general staff meeting on Friday. The situation is also under control on the other front sections.
Russian officers in panic
Earlier, several Russian war reporters and military bloggers had speculated about the start of the Kiev counter-offensive. The Russian Defense Ministry denied the reports. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin then asked the Russian defense minister to personally come to Bakhmut – so that he could assess the actual situation more realistically.
Prigozhin and Shoigu’s relationship is considered strained. In the past, the mercenary boss has repeatedly complained publicly about what he believes is the lack of support from the Defense Department – and he also personally attacked Shoigu.
