According to Hungarian media reports, Hungary is the only EU country that refuses to sign the Union statement condemning human rights violations in Belarus. The document, released by the Swedish EU presidency on behalf of 26 EU member states, is based on the report by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), presented in Vienna on Thursday.
The report sharply criticizes the legislative changes since the crackdown on protests against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko in 2020, believed to have been rigged, and points to the “politically motivated suppression” of the Minsk regime.
“The Belarusian government now has a full legal arsenal to thwart any opposition,” the report said.
Hungary’s reasoning
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry justified the refusal to sign the document with the war in Ukraine. In times of war, the European Union must join forces to ensure that there is even more peace in the neighborhood of the community, according to the online portal “Telex.hu”.
According to the reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Budapest, such political statements would close off the communication channels essential for the start of peace negotiations and thus diminish hopes for peace.
