In mid-April, the start of production of electric trucks for the Swedish brand Volta Trucks at Steyr Automotive was celebrated in the presence of Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler. However, the former MAN factory is not quite on schedule yet. On Friday, the AMS early warning system was activated. Shaking 70 numbers.
MAN is gradually withdrawing more and more production areas from Steyr and moving them to other plants. At the same time, Steyr Automotive is unable to close the gaps that have arisen so quickly. Although it is emphasized that the level of employment on the site is still “above what was originally assumed”, the management cannot avoid taking measures.
Shaking 70 numbers
The AMS early warning system was activated on Friday, reportedly cutting 70 jobs. According to Steyr Automotive, it is still unclear whether so many employees will actually have to leave. The social plan delivered in 2021 must continue to apply, it is emphasized.
There have been repeated staff cuts in recent months: In February, company spokeswoman Birgit Pfefferl confirmed a “personnel adjustment of about 100 employees,” which she said was carried out by advancing exits from the social plan that had already been resolved. At the time, it was strongly denied that more than 100 workers would be affected.
The war in Ukraine has changed everything
The plans for the factory, which Siegfried Wolf had taken over from MAN, were disrupted by the war in Ukraine. The planned cooperation with the Russian vehicle group GAZ erupted due to the sanctions. Furthermore, Steyr wants to develop products under its own brand and possible collaborations are currently being investigated. Steyr Automotive currently employs 1,800 people, including apprentices and temporary workers.
