Normal ticks, the common wood tick, climb on bushes or blades of grass and wait for an animal or human to sweep them away – so they are not very active, explains virologist Norbert Nowotny in the conversation on krone.tv with Jana Pasching. In return, giant ticks are more active. “She senses when someone is approaching through the vibration, can see up to nine meters and follows you – and quite quickly over greater distances.”
The giant tick could be described as particularly nasty, says the virologist. Nevertheless, there is no reason to panic: “This gigantic tick is not yet found on a large scale in Austria and it must also be said that humans are not their favorite host. These are more farm animals.”
Prevention is the same as with normal ticks: wear long clothes, higher shoes or even pants in the shoes. “Then the ticks don’t find it so easy to climb on us,” says Nowotny.
