An AUA aircraft made an emergency landing in Belfast, Northern Ireland, en route from Vienna to New York on Friday evening due to an onboard medical emergency. As the online portal “Austrian Wings” reported, at 7:40 p.m. the crew declared an “emergency” west of the island of Ireland and turned to descend.
At 7:52 p.m. Austrian time, the plane landed with full fuel tanks at the airport in the Northern Irish capital of Belfast. Due to the “overweight landings”, the Boeing 767-300ER must be approved by a certified technician.
In a written statement, an AUA spokeswoman told Austrian Wings that the forced landing was due to a “medical emergency on board”. As “Austrian Wings” learned, the emergency affected a passenger.
The crew decided to do the so-called overweight landing because it would have taken some time to dump fuel across the sea, which would have delayed the passenger’s medical care, they said.
