Heaviest damage – landslide in Vorarlberg: houses threaten to collapse

Date:

It was not until April 29 that a landslide occurred in Hörbranz (Vorarlberg), in which several houses had to be evacuated. Since last weekend, further movements of the earth of more than two meters have been recorded there, since the beginning of May it has exceeded seven meters in total.

This was also confirmed by ÖVP State Councilor Christian Gantner from the Vorarlberg ÖVP. Two of the four houses evacuated on Friday are now at risk of collapse, Mayor Andreas Kresser confirmed.

heaviest damage
The other two buildings are still accessible, but also show considerable damage. One of the houses has sunk 70 centimeters on one side, the living room has an eleven percent slope, says Kresser.

The residents of the four buildings left on Friday on the advice of the experts and went to live with relatives or in new homes. The two houses that are now on the verge of collapse have also been closed by the authorities.

Hang gets faster every day
State geologist Walter Bauer said that “we have the most unfriendly movements right now”. The slope is getting faster every day. Bauer was also skeptical about the precipitation forecast for the next few days: “It won’t do us any good.”

Hang has been sliding since late April
At the end of April, an approximately 150 m wide forest slope began to move in the Hochreute/Halbenstein area. Trees were cut down, debris was pushed through the forest. Neighbors alerted the police because disturbing noises could be heard from the forest. Due to the landslide, 39 people were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. Although people were soon able to return to their homes, the situation did not calm down. Due to the persistent rainy weather, the situation has deteriorated in recent days.
