Rainy days hit the quarry in Oberhaag in the district of Leibnitz (Styria). An incredible 19 million liters of water flooded it and its own pumps could no longer handle the masses.
Sirens wailed throughout the Leibnitz district on Monday after a section alarm was activated: the quarry in the Oberhaager Lieschengraben was under water. The continuous rainfall of the past few days caused a total of 19 million liters of water to flood the quarry. The factory pumps could no longer cope with these masses, which is why those responsible asked for support from the fire brigade.
Under pressure: Next rain is coming
The work is complicated: “You have to be careful not to fall,” says Oberhaag commander Franz Lierzer. The aim is to get the equipment, some of which is unfortunately already damaged, out of the water.
Additional pumps must regulate the water level. But the time to reach this goal is running out: because the heavy rains continue on Monday, the break was only short. A total of 13 fire brigades – support also came from Deutschlandsberg – are engaged in the exhausting large-scale operation.
