People interviewed – pandemic and inflation: Austria is so lonely

Date:

“How lonely is Austria?” Caritas asked this question together with Magenta in the context of a Sora study among a thousand people. One thing is clear: being alone is increasing due to the crises. This topic is therefore more topical than ever.

Loneliness affects health, well-being and social integration. And more and more people are affected by it, according to the current survey: 65 percent believe that the phenomenon of loneliness tends to increase (see graph). One in four even say they have felt lonelier since the pandemic. “We see how widespread loneliness is in Austria today. And it is also clear that the pandemic and inflation are strengthening them like a fire accelerator,” said Klaus Schwertner, general manager of Caritas.

Fewer social contacts due to inflation
Overall, 17 percent say they had to cut back on going out with friends because of price increases. For people with a household income of up to 1,500 euros, every third must limit social contacts. Loneliness also increases with age.

Almost every third person in Austria admits that their quality of life is reduced by loneliness. 25 percent would like more social contacts. But: Six out of ten indicate that the subject is still taboo, especially those surveyed in the East. Differences between urban and rural areas also emerge when it comes to whether you have people you can count on in case of an emergency.

Talking about it helps against the feeling of being alone
In Vienna only half agree, in Styria and Carinthia already 70 percent. Most would like politicians to play an active role.

But what helps against loneliness if you have no reference persons? Personal conversations, even with strangers. The Plaudernetz has been offering this for three years (see interview). The number of callers will certainly increase.
