In Colombia, four children aged between 11 months and 13 years survived alone in the rainforest for more than two weeks. Her plane crashed, killing her mother and two other adults.
The Cessna 206 had already disappeared from radar on May 1 when it flew over the Amazon rainforest. Because the rainforest near San José del Guaviare is very dense and difficult to access, the missing plane was first searched from the air.
But it was not until Monday that rescuers reached the scene of the crash on the ground, said the head of local civil protection, Germany’s Camargo. Rescue teams found bitten fruit from the jungle and a vial at the crash site, hoping for survivors.
Youngest child only eleven months old
In fact, they eventually came across the four children missing after the plane crash. “After an arduous search by our armed forces, we found the four children alive on Wednesday,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on Twitter. The children are eleven months and four, nine and 13 years old. Her mother and two other adults, including the pilot, were killed in the plane crash.
The search involved armed forces, their sniffer dogs and local indigenous people. It is not yet clear why the plane crashed. According to Civil Defense, the pilot had reported engine problems before the plane disappeared from radar.
