An indigenous woman in Mexico has been sentenced to six years and two months in prison for killing her rapist. Roxana R. acted in self-defense, but used excessive force to justify the verdict.
Attempts to dismember corpse
According to this, in 2021 the woman first knocked the perpetrator, whom she knew by sight, unconscious, strangled him with a T-shirt and finally tried to dismember the body. She kept the body for at least 20 hours and then took it out onto the street in a plastic bag.
The 23-year-old mother of one son can still appeal the verdict. Outside the courtroom, an angry mob chanted, “Justice!” R. said she still had hopes of seeing her four-year-old son grow up.
The single mother from the southern state of Oaxaca, who is supported by women’s organizations, had been detained for nine months before being released pending trial. “It was about my life or his life,” the woman said in an interview with the portal “Eme Equis”. She also allegedly paid $16,000 to the rapist’s family as “compensation”.
