Opinions are divided – so thinks the Erdogan generation in Austria

Date:

The political climate in Turkey is heated. How do the young Turks who grew up under the power of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan think? The “Krone” asked around the Viennese Brunnenmarkt.

An economic crisis, limited freedom of the press and authoritarian power relations currently determine life in Turkey. Just under half of the Turkish population is satisfied with the current government and Erdogan as head of state, according to parliamentary elections last Sunday. About 45 percent favored opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu. So now there is a second round between the two rivals.

Austrian-Turks, however, voted for the incumbent party with about 72 percent – many of them young people. In Germany, for example, he managed to get almost 65 percent of the vote. How is it possible that Erdogan is so successful in this country, while people in Turkey are increasingly faced with problems and young people in particular have to live with significant restrictions on their freedom?
