Burgenland police have dealt a heavy blow to a mafia gang that illegally smuggles migrants into Austria. It was accessible via the A3 at Müllendorf. Two accomplices were arrested.
Officials of a special investigation group tracked down the serial offenders when they saw a suspicious car on the A3 near Eisenstadt towards Vienna around noon. The Ford Fiesta with Hungarian license plates turned out to be the escort vehicle of an illegal refugee transport.
Investigators struck
It was seized near Müllendorf. The police stopped the car, there were two Syrians in the car. Immediately on the spot, the officials conducted an extensive investigation. The available information gave initial indications that the two men were accomplices of the smugglers’ mafia.

Further investigation confirmed the suspicion. In concrete terms, it could be proven that the Syrians were involved in at least five illegal refugee transports. The well-paid trips led from Hungary to Austria or via other EU countries to Germany.
“The two suspects, who were silent, are probably accomplices of organized crime since the beginning of 2013,” explained a detective. The arrested serial offenders were taken to Eisenstadt prison.
Almost 6800 seizures
In the first two weeks of May alone, ten people smugglers were caught by the police in the border area with Hungary. The criminals were directly involved in 971 arrests that took place during the same period. Authorities expect a significant increase in migrant registrations in the coming weeks. Almost 6,800 refugees have been registered in Burgenland since January.
