Crash in the jungle – confusion about missing children: search continues

Date:

For more than two weeks, four children have been wandering through the Colombian rainforest after a small plane crashed. After President Gustavo Petro had already announced the rescue of the children on Twitter, he had to grow back on Thursday: they had not been found anyway. However, soldiers were able to discover new traces of the missing.

“I regret what has happened. The armed forces and indigenous communities will continue their relentless quest to bring the country the message it expects. At this point, there is no priority other than to continue searching until they are found. The children’s lives are the most important thing,’ Petro promised.

Emergency services were unable to reach the scene of the accident for days
The siblings, aged 13, 9 and 4 years and 11 months, are wanted after a Cessna 206 propeller plane crashed on May 1 en route from Araracuara to San José del Guaviare in the south of the country with seven people on board.

Because the terrain there is difficult to access, rescuers were only able to reach the wreck near the village of Solana in the Caquetá department on Tuesday. The bodies of the children’s mother, an indigenous activist and the plane’s pilot were found at the crash site, according to the aviation authority.

“They are used to being in the rainforest”
The children belong to an indigenous community and, according to media reports, were on their way with their mother to the capital Bogotá, where their father had fled after constant threats from armed groups. Their knowledge of the region may have helped them survive in the jungle for so long after the crash. “They are used to being in the rainforest,” her grandfather, Fidencio Valencia, told Caracol TV. “With the help of the people, the indigenous energy and the prayers, hopefully we can find the children soon.”

Children are said to have been found by an indigenous search
During their search, the special forces found, among other things, an emergency shelter made of leaves and branches, a baby drinking bottle and half-eaten fruit. The head of the family authority Astrid Cáceres said on the radio: “Yes, they are alive, that is the information we have.” break through soldiers. “We need to understand that the jungle is complex and communication in the region is difficult,” she said.
