Guillermo Lasso has invoked what is known as ‘cross death’, a constitutional formula that entails the dissolution of the National Assembly and the calling of both parliamentary and presidential elections.
The President of Ecuador, William Lassothis Wednesday invoked the constitutional formula known as “transverse death” that implies the dissolution of the National Assembly and the call for parliamentary and presidential elections, less than 24 hours after the impeachment process against him began in parliament.
Lasso has signed a decree he had previously threatened requiring the National Electoral Council (CNE) to set the date for new elections – “immediately”, he claimed -.
He will therefore rule by decree until his successor takes office. The measure leaves room for the government to pass decrees of economic urgency and Lasso has already confirmed the issuance of a decree contemplating a tax cut.
In a message to the nation, Lasso stated that being president, “an honor without comparison,” means making “the right and necessary decisions that each historic moment demands.”
The chairman thinks so Parliament, dominated by the opposition“has as a political project the destabilization of government, democracy and the state”.
Lasso’s decision comes after he appeared before the National Assembly on Tuesday to make his defense statement against the opposition’s charge of an alleged misappropriation (embezzlement) crime. The president has decided to go ahead and not wait for the debate that was to take place in parliament to vote on a no-confidence vote later. The approval of the censure motion to dismiss the head of state would have required 92 votes, equivalent to two-thirds of the chamber.
