Incident in Iran – Protester Caught by Po: Criticizing Police

Date:

Iranian police are not seeking explanations after a police officer grabbed a woman’s butt during nationwide protests. The incident, which was filmed by other protesters and shared on social media, sparked outrage. Police initially tried to portray the video as being manipulated by opponents of the regime, but were eventually forced to admit the incident. The case is now under investigation, according to reports from Saturday.

The attack is said to have taken place this week in the north of the capital Tehran. The video shows that the police want to arrest a protester. However, she resisted vehemently. One of the police officers then grabbed the woman’s buttocks.

Huge outrage on social media
People reacted indignantly on social media, asking how the police of an Islamic state could carry out such an immoral and sexist attack. The protester was eventually released with the help of other protesters.

PR campaign failed
A PR campaign in Vali Asr Square in central Tehran was also an embarrassment to the system. A huge advertising banner with photos of 50 important women should recognize their achievements for the country. However, from the critics’ point of view, the real purpose was to show that the Islamic Republic was not misogynistic.

A short time later, some women – as well as the families of the deceased figures – demanded that their photos be removed. The system has no right to use these people for propaganda without permission to undermine the women’s movement against discrimination. As a result, those responsible had to remove the banner and replace it with an imageless poster.
