$3 billion missing – US: miscalculations in military aid for Ukraine

Date:

Due to a calculation error, the amount of military aid that the US has released since the start of the war in Ukraine had to be revised downwards. It originally assumed nearly $37 billion, but the US Department of Defense has now determined that figure was overestimated by about $3 billion.

According to ntv, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh explained that an accounting error was the cause. In some cases, the calculations took into account the replacement value of the military equipment supplied instead of the net value, which led to an overstatement.

Singh added that these discrepancies were discovered during a regular audit. As a possible consequence, the US could now consider additional arms shipments to make up for the shortfalls.

The US government is expected to reduce the total value of military aid provided to Ukraine since the start of the war. The Ministry of Defense initially estimated the value at more than 36.9 billion dollars (almost 33.7 billion euros).

Calculation error has ‘no negative influence on support’
Staff members and members of the US Congress were informed of the corrections on Thursday, US media report. The funds thus released could open the possibility of approving further arms deliveries.

Pentagon spokeswoman Singh stressed that the accounting error did not negatively affect US aid to Ukraine. The United States is considered Ukraine’s main ally in the fight against the Russian invasion.
