Due to increasing inappropriate behavior by tourists, the Dalmatian metropolis of Split is now introducing fines for inappropriate behavior in public places. Fines of 300 euros are due for acts such as wild urination, bathing in fountains, sleeping in parks and drinking alcohol outside bars. Anyone who vomits in public risks a fine of 150 euros.
Split City Council has introduced fines in response to numerous incidents that have upset locals and made headlines over the past year.
Photos and videos of mainly young tourists urinating in the streets, in courtyards or even in fountains or lying drunk on the street were repeatedly published in the media and social networks.
Some tourists have been caught bathing in fountains – some naked. In 2022, a couple was even filmed having public sex in broad daylight. There have been reports of similar inappropriate behavior in the current season.
Additional security personnel in high season
The city also plans to hire additional security personnel during peak season to help police maintain law and order, Croatian media reported. Split is known for its nightclubs and is popular with partying holidaymakers. In addition, the Ultra Festival in July attracts tens of thousands of music lovers to the city.
