Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Japan for the G7 meeting (see video above). In Hiroshima, he will speak with US President Joe Biden, among others. He only agreed on Friday to supply F-16 fighter jets to the Ukrainian army.
Selenskyj spoke of a “historic decision” that will “significantly strengthen our army in the air.” He looks forward to “discussing the practical implementation of this decision at the G7 summit in Hiroshima.” However, after the US government was first open to supplying his country with Western F-16 fighter jets, he nevertheless traveled to Hiroshima.
The program should include “important meetings with partners and friends of Ukraine”. It’s about “security and improved cooperation”, peace for Ukraine “will come closer today,” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter after his arrival. Biden looks forward to meeting Zelenskyj, Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, confirmed Saturday.
It has already been confirmed that there is a coalition of several alliance partners for the supply of the fighter jets and that pilots are being trained first. According to American information, it will then be determined when and how many aircraft will be delivered by whom. European allies such as the Netherlands and Great Britain are pushing for the jet fighter alliance. The governments of Belgium, Denmark, Portugal and France also support the project.
The US government was waiting for the right time
“Nothing has changed,” says consultant Sullivan. The US has never taken fighter jets off the table, but it never has been. We have now “reached a point where it is time to look to the future” and assess what the Ukrainian armed forces need in the long term. At the same time, it was stressed that the US government would not allow or even support attacks on Russian soil. The Ukrainian army has so far complied with this.
The deliberations of the G7 countries will start on Sunday. Zelenskyy arrived at Hiroshima airport on Saturday on a French government plane that would take him from Saudi Arabia to Japan. He had attended the Arab League summit there to campaign for his country’s support in the war against Russia.
