Residents in fear – ‘Almost don’t dare to leave the apartment’

Date:

Kicking at the door, throwing stones at residents: a youth gang causes fear and terror in Vienna’s Großfeldsiedlung.

Residents of the Großfeldsiedlung in Vienna-Floridsdorf hardly dare to go outside. “Last year the 12 to 16 year olds made our lives hell. Now that the weather is warming up, the crowds are starting to pick up again,” said Hermann and Hermine K.

Last Sunday night there was a riot in the stairwell. “The apartment door was rammed and the lock was almost ripped out of its anchorage, so we now have to get a locksmith to fix it,” the pensioner complains.

Unfortunately, the police did not arrive until about 40 minutes after the call. “But with radio patrols and uniformed officers, that makes little sense anyway. Because when the gang sees cars and police officers, they immediately disappear between the facades of the houses,” says Hermann K. Other victims who called former district councilor Hans Jörg Schimanek for help Neighbors report having stones thrown at them during evening walks with their dogs, as well as at windows and house walls.

According to another affected person, they had even been harassed with money demands: “Give me five euros or I won’t let you into the stairwell!” A gang member would have threatened.

Schimanek is now calling on not only Wiener Wohnen but also the police to take immediate action: “This calls for comprehensive police action, albeit by officials. It is unacceptable that older people who pay their rent and – as they say – have enjoyed living here so far, are terrorized and frightened in this way with impunity!”
