Internal intervention – The Kremlin blacklists Greenpeace

Date:

The Russian government has declared Greenpeace an “undesirable organisation”. It has attempted to interfere in the state’s internal affairs and has engaged in anti-Russian propaganda, it is alleged. This effectively prohibits the NGO’s activities in Russia.

The Russian branch of the environmental protection organization has already announced that it will stop working in the country. The attorney general’s decision made any Greenpeace activity in Russia illegal, it said. Greenpeace International pointed out that, according to the prosecutor’s office, the organization’s work “threatens the foundations of the constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation”. It seeks to meddle in the “internal affairs of the state and undermine its economic foundations”.

Criminal case 2013 for protest
But anyone portraying the NGO in this way “clearly has no idea what Greenpeace Russia has been doing for 30 years,” representatives said. In 2013, the Russian judiciary had already initiated criminal proceedings against activists of the environmental protection organization. The background was an attempt to board an oil rig belonging to the state energy giant Gazprom in the Arctic Ocean to protest oil production in the Arctic.

In addition, activists tried last year to stop a tanker that was supposed to deliver Russian oil to Norway. They chained themselves to the ship in protest against the war in Ukraine. According to the company, the tanker was located in front of the Exxon Mobile oil terminal about 70 kilometers south of Oslo.

The term “undesirable” has been applied to numerous foreign organizations and groups in Russia since 2015. It often serves as a prelude to a full ban by the Justice Department. Since this year, this list has also included Transparency International and the Sakharov Foundation.
